ASEAN Joins Hands With Global Community in Fighting Terrorism

NEW YORK, USA, 20 September 2011 – In commemoration of the 5th Anniversary of the United Nations (UN) Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the UN Secretary-General's Symposium on International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation was organised by the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force Office (CTITF) in partnership with the Executive Office of the Secretary-General and the constituent CTITF entities yesterday, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The Symposium is the first in a series of high-level events being convened this week on the margins of the 66th UN General Assembly. UN Secretary-General Mr Ban Ki-Moon in his inauguration speech highlighted the resolve shown by countries five years ago in adopting the UN Global Counter-terrorism Strategy, while also stressing the need to reinvigorate efforts to conclude the Comprehensive Convention against Terrorism.

The Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, visited the ASEAN Secretariat this afternoon and was received with a warm welcome from the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, and the staff members of the ASEAN Secretariat.

Prime Minister Gusmão and Dr Surin exchanged views on recent developments in Timor-Leste, including the recent application of Timor-Leste to join ASEAN. The Prime Minister also emphasised that Timor-Leste is making active efforts to prepare itself for the ASEAN membership, now that peace and political situation in the country have been secured.

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2009 (AFP) - The State Department hit back Thursday at North Korea's denunciation of Hillary Clinton as "by no means intelligent" and her remarks on denuclearization as "vulgar," saying those terms better describe the regime in Pyongyang.

Friday, July 27, 2007 (The Associated Press) -- Foreign ministers at Asia's top security forum are expected to formally adopt rules next week for creating a group that will respond quickly to emergencies, officials said Friday, in a move seen as enhancing the forum's role beyond an annual talk-shop.
